BOINC Stats for your Desktop

Following a few queries from users regarding having access to their boinc.mundayweb.com graphics on their Windows and Linux desktops, I went in search for a solution.

On the Windows side of things, some of you may say why not just use Active Desktop? Following several tests, it would appear that my mirror system is not liked by Active Desktop.

A much better solution has been found thanks to Yahoo! Widgets. As well as being able to just display graphics and text, the desktop widgets created can be interactive too and do various clever things thanks to its Javascript engine. What's more, Yahoo! Widgets is cross platform, as it is supported by Windows and MAC OS. Unfortunately there is no Linux version...

... but there is a similar application called SuperKaramba which works under the KDE desktop for Linux and other Unix based OSes. Unlike Yahoo! Widgets, SuperKaramba uses Python to add extra functionality to widgets.

Using these two applications I have created two widgets and they can be seen below.

How does it work?

Firstly, you have to download and install SuperKaramba or Yahoo! Widgets depending on the OS that you use.

Next you have to download the appropriate widget from my site.

Both widgets have to be set-up to access your BOINC Stats from MundayWeb. They only require your User ID to do this and a working Internet connection. If you have not registered with the site, please go to the Registration page to get an All-In-One account.

Both widgets are released as Open Source applications under the GPL.

1. Close-up images (you can now choose different background images and colours as of version 0.6)

2. As of 05/01/06, you can now get a version of the widget that shows your teams stats.
